Vanguard Home Improvements, Inc., Receipt
Ella C. Hill (née Besançon) with her younger brother, Richard "Dick" Besançon.
Ella C. Hill (née Besançon) was the first woman in the state of Ohio to become a licensed contractor. She formed Vanguard Home Improvements, Inc., which operated from an old bank building on Cherry Street, in Toledo, during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Carol's Carpet Sales was named in honor of her daughter (whose high school senior picture was, without her daughter's permission, placed alongside the company's ad in the Yellow Pages).
Ella "Clem" Hill (née Besançon) with her younger brother, Richard "Dick" Besançon. I believe that this photograph dates from a train trip Dick took from Stryker to see a doctor in Toledo. That would date this picture circa 1938/1939, shortly after mémé graduated from Stryker High School and moved to Toledo (Dick would have been 12 or 13).
