Date of death: March 15, 2017 (Incidentally, Helene passed away on the 45th anniversary of the death of her brother, Richard C. Hill, only three days shy of her 97th birthday.)
Place of death: Helene passed away just after 6:00 A.M. in the medical wing of the Brooks-Howell Home, 266 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina 28801, United States of America. (She had resided in a housing unit of this Methodist retirement community for approximately twenty years.)
Place of burial: According to her wishes, Helene's body was donated to Durham Medical Center (4220 North Roxboro Street, Durham, North Carolina 27704, part of the Duke University Health System).
Obituary from the Grand Rapids Press (28 March 2017): Hill, Helene R. 3/18/1920 - 3/15/2017 Asheville, NC Helene R. Hill, 96, of Asheville died March 15, 2017 at Brooks-Howell Home following a period of declining health. She was born March 18, 1920 in North Baltimore, Ohio to the late Grover Allen & Helen Jeanette Wommer Hill. She was the fifth child out of seven and the first girl. A 1938 graduate of Libbey High School in Toledo and a 1944 graduate of National College for Christian Workers in Kansas City, Missouri. She went on to receive her BS in education cum laude from North Western University in 1950 and her Masters in Social Welfare in 1963 from Boston University School of Social Work. She was a Georgia Harkness Scholar in residence from September 1991- March 1992 at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. Helene spent thirty years with the National Division of the Department of Community Centers, Board of Global Ministries of the United Methodist Church in Ohio, Delaware, Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Michigan. In June 1950, she was commissioned a Deaconess in New York City and was consecrated in Central Pennsylvania Conference in 1950 by Bishop Bromley Oxnam. She was consecrated a Diaconal Minister in June 1978 by Bishop Edsel Ammons in the West Michigan Conference. She was with the Association of Certified Social Workers since 1965. She retired from full time ministry in June 1986 but remained very active. Traveling the world extensively, she did Peace Work in Retirement. Even while retired, she secured a school bus for Colegio Bautista, Nicaragua. Helene retired to Brooks-Howell Home in 1995 with her daughter, Barbara J. Crounse. They joined Jubilee Community Church and have remained active with many friends. A memorial service will be held 10:00 AM, Thursday, March 30. 2017 in the chapel of Brooks-Howell Home, 266 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville, NC with Reverends Howard Hanger and Alycia Johnson officiating.
